About

Sannat

Sannat lies to the south of the island. The name is possibly derived from that of an Arabic-Greek family that moved to Gozo from Sicily. The village has the largest garigue in the Maltese islands in an area known as Ta’ Ċenċ, where the cliffs rise perpendicularly from the sea to impressive heights. Besides the excellent views of the countryside and the sea, there is a great variety of wild plants and several prehistoric remains, though these are not easy to locate. There is also a small bay at Mġarr ix-Xini and a tiny inlet at Il-Kantra. The parish church is dedicated to St Margaret Virgin and Martyr.
Ta' Sannat jinsab f’nofsinhar tal-gżira Għawdxija. L-isem ġej possibbilment minn dak ta’ familja Għarbija-Griega li ġiet tgħix Għawdex minn Sqallija. Ir-raħal għandu l-ikbar garigue fil-gżejjer Maltin. Il-garigue hi kelma teknika li tirreferi għal fetħa art pjuttost blatija b’ħamrija baxxa u niexfa b’ħafna arbuxelli, siġar baxxi, u ħxejjex aromatiċi, tipika tar-reġjun tal-Mediterran. Dan jinsab fiż-żona magħrufa bħala Ta’ Ċenċ, fejn l-irdumijiet jitilgħu b’mod perpendikolari mill-baħar għal għoli verament impressjonanti. Minbarra l-veduti eċċellenti tal-kampanja u l-baħar, u l-varjetà kbira ta’ pjanti, hemm ukoll fdalijiet preistoriċi, għalkemm dawn mhux faċli li wieħed isibhom. Il-bajja żgħira ta’ Mġarr ix-Xini u d-daħla ċkejkna tal-Kantra huma għaxqa għall-għawm. Il-knisja parrokkjali hija ddedikata lil Santa Margerita Verġni u Martri.
