About
Marsalforn
Marsalforn is the most popular summer resort of Gozo. The name is a composite of two Arabic words, marsa lifurna, the harbour of the caves hallowed by the sea. Up to the early seventeenth century, before the development of Mġarr harbour, Marsalforn was the principal seaport of Gozo. It is no more, but the place is saturated with hotels, apartments, restaurants, bars, as well as diving and water-sports clubs. On the road to il-Qbajjar and ix-Xwejni, another two inlets, there is a nice promenade with trees and fountains. Beyond ix-Xwejni, there are a number of saltpans, some of which date from Roman times. The church of Marsalforn is dedicated to Saint Paul Shipwrecked.
Marsalforn huwa post mill-iktar popolari għall-villeġġjatura matul ix-xhur tas-sajf. L-isem ġej minn żewġ kelmiet bl-Għarbi magħquda: marsa lifurna, jiġifieri l-port tal-għerien imħaffra mill-baħar. Sas-sena 1600, jiġifieri sal-bidu tas-seklu sbatax, Marsalforn kien il-port ewlieni ta’ Għawdex. Spiċċa minn hekk mal-bidu tal-iżvilupp tal-port tal-Imġarr. Illum il-post huwa mburġat b’lukandi, appartamenti, ristoranti, bars, u klabbs tal-għadis u tal-isports tal-ilma. Lilhinn mill-port, hemm ġnien sabiħ mimli siġar u funtani, u iktar il-ġewwa żewġ daħliet oħra mill-isbaħ, il-Qbajjar u ix-Xwejni. Lilhinn mix-Xwejni, hemm għadd ta’ salini, li wħud minnhom imorru lura għal żmien ir-Rumani. Il-knisja ta’ Marsalforn hija ddedikata lin-Nawfraġju ta’ San Pawl f’Malta.
