Horse races of Santa Maria in Victoria

This rare image offers a glimpse into the vibrant cultural traditions of Gozo, as crowds gather to witness the annual horse races during the Santa Maria feast on the 15th August 1928. The streets are lined with onlookers, both on the ground and atop buildings, emphasising the importance of this event. These races are believed to date back to medieval times, originally held to keep the cavalrymen of Id-Dejma, the local militia, well-prepared. Riders competed with pride, spurring on their horses, mares, mules, donkeys, and even taking part themselves in foot races. The tradition is still very much alive. Today, the races are no longer held on the afternoon of Santa Marija itself (15 August), but instead take place in the evening on a different date to safeguard the wellbeing of the horses.
