Riders competed with pride, spurring on their horses, mares, mules, donkeys, and even taking part themselves in foot races. The tradition is still very much alive. Today, the races are no longer held on the afternoon of Santa Marija itself (15 August), but instead take place in the evening on a different date to safeguard the wellbeing of the horses.
