About

Francis was the nephew of Giuseppe Cremona. He was born in Ir-Rabat Gozo on 14 January 1929. He practised photography from the house of his father at 67 Charity Street, Gozo. Francis married Doris née Mercieca, and they had four children, two boys and two girls. He was a teacher by profession, and he built on the previous work and clients of Joseph, who had never married. Francis started commercial photography in the late 1940s, using most of the equipment inherited from his uncle. His enlarged black and white photos were artistically hand-coloured by his sister Carmela Cremona. In the early 1970s, Francis moved his studio to the current Cremona family home in St. John Bosco Street, also in Victoria, Gozo. There he set himself up in the basement practicing freelance photography such as weddings, confirmations and studio portraiture. Fortunately, his two artistic backdrops that he used for taking studio photographs, hand painted by the famed local artist Gianni Vella, still exist.

Francis also branched out into photographing views and events apart from doing the normal, more lucrative commercial work. Around 1950, Francis even became involved in cine filming. He continued working in photography up to 1989.
