Triq ta' San Ġorġ tal-Ħaġar

A familiar corner in the old part of Victoria - where Triq il-Librerija meets Triq San Ġorġ, known affectionately as it-Triq ta' San Ġorġ tal-Ħaġar. This photo was taken sometime after 1925, as it features the statue of St George sculpted by Ġużeppi Agius - the same statue that still stands proudly at this spot today. This statue had replaced an earlier, smaller one - a landmark statue in its own right - which was famously depicted in a watercolour by Edward Caruana Dingli (1876 - 1950). That painting is now housed at MUŻA, the National Art Museum in Valletta. The original statue itself, believed to be one of the oldest roadside statues in Gozo, was relocated in 1920s to stand in front of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Pompei. After nearly a century, it was moved once again - this time to Il-Ħaġar - Heart of Gozo Museum, where it is now being preserved and on permanent display.
