The 1948 Gozo Luzzu Tragedy

Categories & Tags: Vehicles People
In 1948, 27 people attempted to return to Gozo after the MV Bacinu refused to sail due to bad weather. Desperate to get home, they boarded a small luzzu but the sea turned deadly. Only four survived, and 23 lives were lost. One survivor, Karmnu Attard, swam all the way to Ħaġret iċ‑Ċawl and then ran to the Qala Police Station to raise the alarm, an incredible feat completed in just 50 minutes. A tragic chapter in Gozo’s maritime history, forever remembered.
