St Lawrence Church

Categories & Tags: Square
This particular image from the 1910s captures the church of St Lawrence in the village that shares his name – a village celebrating its festa today. While the façade remains much the same, the photograph predates the significant expansion works carried out in the 1950s. In 1952, the village embarked on an ambitious project to enlarge and enhance the church. Completed in 1957, the works added spacious side aisles giving the once modest church and a new cruciform layout. Notably absent in this photo are the central dome and the side cupolas – later additions that transformed the church’s profile. Today, the silver dome and side cupolas of the parish church of San Lawrenz remain distinctive from the traditionally red-domed churches found scattered around the island of Gozo.
